Ah, Christmas morning. I can fondly remember the many Christmases that found my family scrambling around the Christmas tree trying to grab all of the gifts that had our names, while tossing the others out of the way like garbage. Beneath the pretty paper and tacky bows each gift promised to be an exciting new joy, well, at least for the next few hours. Christmas comes and Christmas goes, and all too soon, distracted by what everyone else received, we forget the gifts we were given.
This Christmas, as you unwrap your presents, or if like many, you find yourself giftless, try to remember the greatest gift given to you this holiday season.
God’s love was revealed among us in this way: God sent God’s only Child into the world so that we might live through him. In this is love, not that we loved God but that God loved us and sent God’s Child to be an offering for us. Beloved, since God loved us so much, we also ought to love one another. No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God lives in us, and God’s love is perfected in us. 1 John 4: 9-12
I cannot imagine a better gift this holiday season: the gift of love. Take a moment this day to share your love with the people in your life. Whether close enough to hug or far enough to call, show the people in your life that the gift given unto you, the gift of love, is a lasting gift that can be shared, unlike that fabulous pair of holiday socks you received from your crazy aunt Mildred.
Giving God, thank you for the gift of love that we all need this season, and every day of our lives. Help us to remember Your gift that is freely given as this day continues and a new one begins. AMEN
