Rev. Dawson B. Taylor
“But Mary treasured all these words and pondered them in her heart.” Luke 2:19
I honestly cannot believe I said it. I was standing in a friend’s beautiful home surrounded by wonderful people last week at a holiday party. A small group of us were discussing the hectic, crazy schedules that we are all experiencing during this season and I just blurted out “Yeah, I hate Christmas.” Needless to say, it felt like everyone in the room stopped to stare at the minister who just publicly proclaimed that he hated one of the holiest times of the year.
Fortunately my friends laughed it off to my fatigue and I though don’t think anyone took the comment too seriously, it caused me to pause and truly reflect on what I had said. I was being flippant, but honest. I do not hate the religious holiday of Christmas at all. In fact, I relish our special worship services and time with family and friends. What I dislike is the commercialization of the Christmas season and that what really matters about this time of year gets lost in the frantic shopping excursions, elaborate parties and hectic gift wrapping. It is so easy to get caught up in the “stuff” of the season, that we forget why it is that we celebrate all that is precious in our lives during this time. We forget that the greatest gift God could ever give us came to us in the gift of Jesus.
It is the Monday before Christmas. Many of us feel the stress and strain of the season and the frenetic pace of the week ahead. However, maybe the most important lesson is to be learned from Mary, the mother of Jesus in our scripture lesson for today: “But Mary treasured all these words and pondered them in her heart.” Instead of pondering the hectic, somewhat chaotic pace of the season, let’s ponder the gift that is ours in Jesus, the Christ. Join us this week for one of our many special worship experiences as we pause to consider in our hearts all the goodness of Christmas.
