Give instruction to the wise, and they will become wiser still; teach the righteous and they will gain in learning. Proverbs 9:9
As the New Year swiftly approaches I am struck by the unspoken ‘catch’ in Proverbs 9:9. Assuming that we desire to be wise, righteous, and learned, this passage reminds us that it “takes two to tango.” In other words, in order to be wiser – we must heed instruction; in order to be learned, we must attend to the teacher.
The New Year inevitably brings with it resolutions, commitments, promises, and pacts made with self and with friends and loved ones. This weekend, as I contemplate who I desire to be in the year to come, my prayer is that I will heed instruction as I attend to the teacher, and in doing so I pray I might one day be wiser still. I invite you to join me in that same contemplation.
Let those who have ears to hear, listen. Let those who have eyes to see, look. Let those who have heart to heal, love.
May your New Year be bright with the light of love and endless possibility!
God of all mystery and grace – In this coming year, grant us a heart to heal, the eyes to see, and the ears to hear. Grant us strength to heed instruction and grow in wisdom. In your name we pray, Amen.
