“My little children, I’m going through labor pains again until Christ is formed in you. But I wish I could be with you now and change how I sound, because I’m at a loss about you.” -Paul’s Letter to the Church of Galatia, 4:19-20
A Word of Hope
Like the Apostle Paul in today’s scripture reference, have you ever been perplexed? Perhaps you are “at a loss” right now because Christmas Day is only 2 days away and you are not quite ready! Maybe you are perplexed about something much larger that is going on in your life: a relationship that’s not working out as you had hoped; a business or career decision that is troubling you; a health issue that is vexing; or your own uncertain future.
Fear not! Just as Mary went through labor pains at the nativity of the Christ Child, so are pangs of labor involved in the birthing of decisions, the resolution of relationships, and the arrival of your plans for tomorrow. Life is a journey, a process that is not always easy. Even so, God is with us on that journey, perfecting the love of Christ in each of us if we are willing to follow Jesus’ way.
I read an article about heroes that said heroes are people who are available when there is a need, who have a strong moral compass (know right from wrong), and have a great sense of empathy for others. If you are feeling particularly troubled right now, stop to focus on your breathing. Listen to the voice of the Spirit of God that is your moral compass. Have compassion for others and seek what truly matters rather than get bogged down in what may be urgent but is not truly vital in the bigger scheme of things.
Spiritually visit the manger of Bethlehem this Christmas and allow the message of that messenger to give you direction. Following Christ is a course correction that can change your life forever.
Holy God, thank you for showing up in the form of Jesus so that we could better understand what true love, compassion, and justice look like. Thank you for loving us so very much! Amen.
