SCRIPTURE
Romans 2:15
(Gentiles) show that the requirements of the law are written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing witness, and their thoughts sometimes accusing them and at other times even defending them.
WORDS OF HOPE
I count among my friends and family those who might be described by church people as “non-believers” or “unchurched” or even “pagans”. These are people who have never been to a Sunday School class or decided at some point in their life not to return to a church building, unless absolutely necessary.
These loved ones are generous, thoughtful, loyal, and kind to just about anyone. They donate time and money to worthy causes, send greeting cards and visit to those who need lifting up, and protect those who are unable to defend themselves. Some have tarot cards and practice witchcraft and others just use their time on Sunday mornings to sleep in and still get the good seats for brunch before the faithful leave the sanctuary.
In the second chapter of Romans, Paul distinguishes between those who have been to Church and Sunday School and know all the lessons and those who have not. And it’s not the difference you might think it is. He talks about how these Gentiles, despite not knowing the Torah, demonstrate an inherent understanding of moral behavior. Paul asserts that their hearts know the law without ever picking up the Scripture and this internal compass directs them to do what the holy words tell the faithful to do.
Righteousness is not confined to those who strictly follow religious laws. It also extends to anyone who leads a life of moral principles, regardless of whether or not they “go to church”. If you know the law, your thankful heart should happily and joyfully do as it says. However, God doesn’t see just the visible actions and give credit for a good report card from Sunday School, but God also sees the hidden intentions of the heart.
This chapter of Romans challenges us to rethink our ideas of righteousness and justice. God’s favor isn’t based on following the religious laws to the letter, especially if done by an ungrateful heart. Her heart is pleased by those whose grateful souls respond to the world with peace and justice, whether they know the scripture or not.
PRAYER
Loving God, you see our hearts and actions. Help us live in a way that reflects your words, not just going through the motions but really following Your lead. Give us the wisdom to do what’s right and the strength to stay true to Your moral compass. Thanks for Your grace and guidance. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
