SCRIPTURE
Luke 1.13-14
But the angel said to him: “Do not be afraid, Zechariah; your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to call him John. He will be a joy and delight to you, and many will rejoice because of his birth.
WORDS OF HOPE
These are times of uncertainty for many people. Sometimes a little extra faith is required. Our faith in God is founded in our hope and actions, all of which are based in an assurance of God's goodness to guide us through difficult times. If our prayer communication with God indicates a path for action which seems unreal or unobtainable, then what must we do?
Well, that was the question which Zechariah had to answer. You remember Zechariah? In the first chapter of Luke's Gospel, we read that he was a priest, both he and his wife were very old, and they had no children. While preparing to offer incense in the Jerusalem Temple, an angel from God appeared to him. Zechariah was told that even in the couple's advanced age, they would have a baby boy who would serve God in a special way.
The baby should be given the name, John, and he would be a forerunner to the true Messiah's arrival. This child would be filled with the Spirit of God and empowered like the prophet, Elijah. His preaching of repentance would result in many Jews turning from disobedience and toward obedience to the laws of God.
However, Zechariah's immediate response was doubt. How could he and Elizabeth have a successful pregnancy? They had tried for years and failed. His wife might laugh or ridicule him for trying against all odds. However, the gospel story implies that Zechariah went back home to try again with Elizabeth. It didn't seem possible, but he obeyed the words of the angel.
We must remember faith in God’s word and obedience to God is founded in our hope and action. The angel’s presence had provided assurance of God's goodness and truth. So, it is with us in these difficult and uncertain times.
Faith did pay off for Elizabeth and Zechariah and it can for is. Their promised baby, John, (the Baptist) grew in the spirit and power of God and became the voice which welcomed Jesus into his redeeming ministry. It’s a good lesson to remember as we prepare to welcome Jesus among us in this Season of Advent.
PRAYER
May we have the strength of faith to know in this time of preparation that once again hope and peace will be born into this world. Amen
