No, We Are Not Okay
A Pastoral Reflection
Dear Members and Friends of Cathedral of Hope,
Grace and peace to you in a time when many of us are weary.
I want to begin with a simple, honest truth: no, we are not OK.
We are living through days that feel heavy. The news cycle rarely brings relief. Violence, political division, attacks on LGBTQ+ lives, the erosion of civil discourse, economic anxiety, and the ongoing strain on our mental health, these are not abstract issues. They land in our bodies. They disturb our sleep. They tighten our chests. They test our faith.
And pretending otherwise does not serve our souls.
Scripture reminds us that even Jesus wept. The Psalms are filled with lament. Our faith does not require denial, it invites truth-telling. At Cathedral of Hope, we are not called to spiritual bypassing. We are called to courageous honesty.
No, we are not OK.
Some of us are anxious.
Some are grieving.
Some are angry.
Some feel numb.
Some are simply exhausted.
And yet, this is not the end of the story. I still believe that we are an Easter people, even in the season of Lent!
The Church exists for moments like these. Not to offer shallow reassurance, but to offer deep companionship. Not to promise easy answers, but to hold sacred space where we can breathe again.
If you are struggling emotionally or spiritually, please know you are not alone, and you do not have to carry it privately.
- Pastoral Care Appointments – Our clergy are available for confidential conversation and prayer. Reaching out is not weakness; it is wisdom.
- Congregational Care Ministers – Trained lay caregivers who offer one-to-one listening and support during difficult seasons (email Rev. Dawson for more info).
- Support and Recovery Groups – We have our Hope in Grief on Mondays and Hope in Recovery on Tuesdays (email Rev. Jeremy for more info).
- Sunday Worship – Sacred rhythm matters. Being together matters. Join us even when you "don't feel it." We want you to be a part of our community regardless of the headspace you are in.
- Community Gatherings and Life Groups – Because isolation is the enemy of resilience (engage with our Thursday email or check out our website for info on Life Groups).
- Professional Counseling - We have partnered with 53 Christopher to offer some appointments with Licensed Professional Counselors on Sundays at CoH (find more information here).
- A new partnership with Reflections Lifestyle Center, providing PHP/IOP therapy for adults facing mental health and substance use challenges. They offer a complimentary assessment.
If your mental health feels fragile, I encourage you to seek professional support as well. Faith and therapy are not in opposition; they are partners in healing.
Beloved, we may not be OK, but we are together.
And together, we are resilient. Together, we remember that despair is loud but not sovereign. Together, we practice hope, not as denial, but as defiance.
The world may feel fractured, but the Spirit is still moving. Love is still organizing. Justice is still rising. And this community remains a sanctuary for your whole, honest self.
If you need support, please reach out. If you are strong right now, help hold space for someone who is not. This is how the Body of Christ works.
No, we are not OK.
But we are beloved.
We are connected.
And by God’s grace, we are becoming.
With you in hope and honesty,
Rev. Neil
