Your gifts become ministry when they are shared with other
Every Gift Has a Purpose
Churches do much better today in helping members discern their ministries in the church and community based on their gifts rather than merely filling positions needed by the church. Questions that may help you understand where God is calling you include:
- What brings you joy?
- What can you do as well as just about anyone?
- What tasks bring you satisfaction?
- What do other people say you are god at doing?
- What things do you enjoy doing so much that you lose track of time?
The 12 spiritual gifts we talk about, are loosely based on the following biblical passages:
1 Corinthians 12:4-11, 28-31
Now there are varieties of gifts but the same Spirit, and there are varieties of services but the same Lord, and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. To one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, to another the working of powerful deeds, to another prophecy, to another the discernment of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. All these are activated by one and the same Spirit, who allots to each one individually just as the Spirit chooses.
Ephesians 4:7-13
But each of us was given grace according to the measure of Christ’s gift. Therefore it is said,
“When he ascended on high, he made captivity itself a captive;
he gave gifts to his people.”
(When it says, “He ascended,” what does it mean but that he had also descended into the lower parts of the earth? He who descended is the same one who ascended far above all the heavens, so that he might fill all things.) He himself granted that some are apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until all of us come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to maturity, to the measure of the full stature of Christ.
Romans 12:6-8
We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.
1 Peter 4:10
Like good stewards of the manifold grace of God, serve one another with whatever gift each of you has received.
The term "spiritual gifts" comes from the Greek words
charismata referring to the "expression of grace," or "expression of Spirit."
While there are different kinds of gifts, generally speaking spiritual gifts are:
- God-given graces (special abilities)
- meant for works of service, to benefit and build up other people
The pastors and staff are not the ones that do the ministry of the church. They empower the members of the congregation to do ministry by understanding and using their spiritual gifts.
Once you know what your spiritual gifts are, contact Amani Murphy, Congregational Life Coordinator, and she will help match you with a ministry in which you may use your gifts.
Then you will be ready to take off your bib and put on your apron, to serve rather than to be served. This is what it really means to be a member of the church. Every member a minister.
