SCRIPTURE
Romans 5: 5
“Hope does not disappoint us, for the love of God has been poured out into our hearts.” Romans 5: 5
WORDS OF HOPE
Whether or not you watched the Emmy’s, you have probably seen the inspiring clip of Sheryl Lee Ralph’s response to winning best supporting actress for her role as Barbara Howard on Abbott Elementary. At first singing with Odetta-like force from the depths of her being, the Jamaican-American actress belted out:
“I am an endangered species./But I sing no victim’s song.
I am a woman. I am an artist, and I know where my voice belongs.” *
In her remarks following the song, she delivered an impassioned exhortation to “anyone who has ever had a dream and thought [their] dream wouldn’t, couldn’t come true. I am here to tell you that this is what believing, striving looks like, and don’t you ever, ever give up on you!”
In his chapter on hope in Ladder to the Light, Steven Charleston asserts that it is important to proclaim hope when hope is scarce, important “to keep singing, keep working, keep helping the wounded to walk.” Ralph has done just that for every person with a dream, especially those whose aspirations have been ignored, minimized, patronized, or thwarted by inequity.
Because “discouragement and resignation are dangers to hope” (Charleston), we must encourage the dreams of others and help them know that their voice and vision belong in a church like the Cathedral of Hope—and the larger community.
Hope is a decision. It is creation in action, and even one drop of hope can be like water in the desert (Charleston).
Hope is our home, at the core of our existence, animated by the love of God poured in our hearts from the beginning of time. May we live it out individually and communally, believing that hope can change history.
PRAYER
Ever-Sustaining God, Your plans for us are to give us a future of hope. Restore our vision and belief in the depth of your love and your faith in us. Help us live into your hope. Amen.
