SCRIPTURE
Matthew 12:25
Every kingdom divided against itself is laid waste, and no city or house divided against itself will stand.
WORDS OF HOPE
These words attributed to Jesus were spoken to the Pharisees when they saw him casting out demons and healing people. They assumed he must be in league with the demons to have such powers. They were driven by fear.
Today we seem to live in a house divided against itself. Much of what goes on in our country is driven by fear. Fear of others who are different from us. Fear of things we don’t understand.
In reality, fear is the real demon. It drives us to make irrational choices and act out in ways that might go against our own self interests. More importantly, that demon drives us to act in ways that harm those people we should be seeing as our neighbors, our fellow citizens and sometimes our own families.
Jesus went on to say, “Therefore I tell you, people will be forgiven for every sin and blasphemy, but blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven.” Perhaps when we irrationally fear our neighbors we are blaspheming against the Spirit? We are turning away from that holy part of everyone and refusing to see them all as children of God like ourselves.
I try to remember that when I find myself angered at the words of another. I try to remember that they are facing struggles internally and externally like me. I don’t have to agree with them, but I do have to allow them a little grace. That same grace that cast out my own demons might just go a little way toward helping them.
PRAYER
God of many names, may I remember that our world is your “house” and may I seek to keep it strong, undivided and upright that all may find shelter within the walls of faith.
Amen
