SCRIPTURE
Matthew 9: 17
Neither is new wine put into old wineskins; if it is, the skins burst, and the wine is spilled, and the skins are destroyed; but new wine is put into fresh wineskins, and so both are preserved.
WORDS OF HOPE
When I first got into a 12 Step recovery program, I remember people quoting Albert Einstein, “the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over again expecting different results.” In other words, I had tried my own method of getting clean and sober, but it never worked because I was still doing the same things over again.
Jesus says something similar in this quote about new wineskins. I believe he is talking about a new way of life and of living that he offered. To try to shoehorn that new way of life into our old patterns would not work. We had to start fresh.
Jesus offers us that fresh start if we are willing to leave our “old wineskins” behind. If we are truly to follow Jesus, we must do a top to bottom revision of our lives. We cannot center ourselves on personal gain and selfishness, instead we must become vessels for the grace God offers us and we in turn offer to all.
Trying to fit His teachings into our old ways of doing things just won’t work. The phrase “born again” comes to mind, but not in the way many evangelicals see it. To my way of seeing it, being born again offers us a clean slate, a chance to become a new and better person. It is not a secret handshake that gets us into heaven but a new life through which we can build heaven on earth.
PRAYER
God, let me be that new wineskin that my soul be filed with the spirit and my life carry that spirit to the world each day.
Amen.
