SCRIPTURE
Luke 4.38-39
Jesus left the synagogue and went to the home of Simon. Now Simon’s mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever, and they asked Jesus to help her. So, he bent over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her. She got up at once and began to wait on them.
WORDS OF HOPE
Today’s account from the Gospel of Luke is one of many narratives that point to the resilience of women throughout the history of the Hebrew people. Here we meet Simon Peter’s Mother-in-law who Jesus heals of a high fever. She could, justifiably, have stayed in bed to recover her strength after a serious illness, but she immediately chose to spring up and practice the most revered ministry of the day: Hospitality.
Being the matriarch of the house, she was not about to designate that holy tradition to anyone else, not even her own daughter. Though she lived in a patriarchal society, she was one of a long and distinguished line of women who knew their roles in directing and perpetuating the history of the chosen people as promised by God to Sarah and Abraham. Consider the examples she had the honor of following.
The first was Sarah herself, who made sure her son Isaac would be the next designated leader of their tribe, as did Rebecca after her, whose son Jacob would become the father of the 12 tribes, and much later, Bathsheba, whose son Solomon would never have seen the throne without the authority of his determined mother. We also remember the Hebrew Scripture stories of the wise women of the Bible: Miriam the Prophet, Deborah, the Prophet and Judge, Huldah the Prophet, Anna the Prophet, and Abigail, whose courage and empathy tamed an army.
Their patriarchal husbands, brothers, and kings never failed to follow the leadership of these wise women. Like most patriarchs today however, their main pursuits were starting and losing wars and acquiring as much leverage over their neighbors as possible. The world has always needed more matriarchs in charge.
Ani DiFranco, American-Canadian singer-songwriter, makes this observation: “I sincerely believe patriarchy to be at the root of all of our social diseases and feminism, it's antidote, to be a prerequisite to peace on earth. Feminism provides an alternative way that focuses on and prioritizes relationships and de-emphasizes hierarchy, separation and domination.”
To that I say: Amen
PRAYER
Thank you for the women in our lives and in the lives of our ancestors who have taught us to pay attention to the needs of others while nurturing the wisdom and growth of us all. Amen.
