SCRIPTURE
John 14.27
Peace I leave with you; peace I give to you, not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your hearts be troubled. Neither should you be afraid.
WORDS OF HOPE
What does it feel like being at peace with yourself? Is your home or your life peaceful or is it full of conflict.? In the words of John, is your heart troubled? What do you do to create an environment for yourself to feel peaceful? Do watch a movie? Do you isolate? Do you overeat? Perhaps you overuse certain substances? Where is the chocolate hidden in your space? Perhaps, like me, you have successfully found some decent things to bridge yourself between the times you have lost your peace of mind. In a very short time, we will be entering the season of “peace on Earth, good will to all.” To me that is authentic peace, but God never said it would be easy to achieve that goal.
What occurs in your life to bring you authentic inner peace? Recently, I came through a family conflict; the center of which were around serious things gone wrong in my childhood. The situations brought forth discussions of anger and resentment, but ultimately resulted in a microscopic look at what caused the emotional eruption. Old wounds had been opened and we found ourselves reliving some events that were the epicenter of many years of what I’d call an undercurrent of suffering. We had been shielding ourselves from further emotional damage.
The process took about four months, which none of us will ever get back, yet it came with a feeling of closure and of peace. The amount of strife and foreboding held over us internally for years and years transformed us. There was now a light at the end of longest tunnel which I didn’t realize I had been walking. It had become a part of my life so deeply ingrained, that it tainted my perspective. The inner peace I once possessed had, I thought, been stolen from me with knowing it was gone. It was clear that it had always been within my reach.
It was like that old “Wizard of Oz” analogy about Dorothy having had the power all along to go home if she simply clicked her heels, but nobody could tell her. She had to believe it for herself. That movie is chock full of other delicious metaphors; meeting friends along your journey who have no heart, no courage, and no brains. You’ve met them. You’ve probably helped them discover it for themselves. Dorothy modeled Christ’s example of centering on the needs of others, and in doing so, achieved her own inner peace.
Dorothy’s home was in fact her own symbol of inner peace; never needing to look outside of herself but within for her heart’s desire. Inner peace can happen anywhere you are. It’s about being always at peace within yourself, whether you are at home or not. My family drama existed a long time ago but had overshadowed my life invisibly for the longest time.
A little “peace” of trivia; did you know Margaret Hamilton’s role as the Wicked Witch of the West was in only 12 minutes of the entire movie, but think of the troubled heart Dorothy felt the moment she arrived because of the witch’s threat. As for anyone in your life who takes away your inner peace, do not be afraid. It’s okay to tell them “Be gone! You have no power here!”
PRAYER
Help us to remember that “Peace I leave with you; peace I leave with you” is not just a comforting phrase, but a reality. May we know within our troubled hearts that your gift of inner peace has been there waiting for us all along. Amen
