SCRIPTURE
Luke 22:39-46
He came out and went, as was his custom, to the Mount of Olives, and the disciples followed him. When he reached the place, he said to them, “Pray that you may not come into the time of trial.” Then he withdrew from them about a stone’s throw, knelt down, and prayed, “Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me, yet not my will but yours be done.” [[Then an angel from heaven appeared to him and gave him strength. In his anguish he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat became like great drops of blood falling down on the ground.]] When he got up from prayer, he came to the disciples and found them sleeping because of grief, and he said to them, “Why are you sleeping? Get up and pray that you may not come into the time of trial.”
WORDS OF HOPE
“Hemasiderosis.” That’s the actual condition that causes people to sweat blood. For most of my life I thought it was a metaphoric expression, but that was before the invention of Wikipedia. It can be caused by extreme stress, either physical or psychological and that seems exactly what Jesus was facing in this passage of scripture.
I have sometimes been in a place where I thought sweating blood was not out of the question. When a business I helped build was forced into bankruptcy, when a relationship ended, when a loved one died. Times of emotional and psychological stress to be sure.
I also learned long ago that when I find myself in a “stress spiral”, the feeling that my life was spinning out of control, I stop what I am doing and go to my own personal Mount of Olives. I find a quiet place, my office, my car or even the rest room and turn to my higher power which I call God.
I ask God not to remove the problem, but my overreaction to it. I ask God for guidance and serenity and most of all I ask the same thing Jesus did, “not my will but yours be done.”
So far it has always worked. Oh, the problems are still there, but I find I can approach them with a calm resolve and serenity that allows me to think clearly. Most of the stress was self-induced anyway and asking for God’s guidance gives me the motivation to do what needs to be done, even if it’s tough.
PRAYER
God, I ask that you calm the rolling sea of my emotions and give me your guidance. May Your will, not mine be done. Amen.
