SCRIPTURE
Psalm 86:8-10
Among the gods there is none like you, Lord; no deeds can compare with yours. All the nations you have made will come and worship before you, Lord; they will bring glory to your name. For you are great and do marvelous deeds; you alone are God.
WORDS OF HOPE
The first Friday in March is designated as World Day of Prayer. This worldwide movement was initiated and continues to be carried out by women, who in over 170 countries, have a continuing relationship in prayer and service. Through this day, women affirm that prayer and action are inseparable, with the motto being: Informed Prayer and Prayerful Action.
The most notable fact about World Day of Prayer was that it was founded and continues by women. Throughout culture, country, race, and space, women know best that both informed prayer and prayerful action are what save children, bring peace, restore relationships, and nurture charity.
The other noteworthy awareness is that it is not prayer alone, but prayer must be paired with action. “Action without prayer winds up in a ditch” said theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer. “Prayer without action winds up in a ghetto.” World Day of Prayer affirms that prayer and action are indissoluble. Again, women best know that when the prayer is over, it’s time to get to work. Fr. Ronald Rolheiser in his book The Holy Longing: The Search for a Christian Spirituality says this: “To pray as a Christian demands concrete involvement in trying to bring about what is pleaded for in prayer…Our prayers need our flesh to back them up.”
Finally, it is the assertion that it should always be Informed Prayer. In these days, we are greatly and daily informed of the issues for which we need to pray and how that prayer should lead us to action. As we find people and systems that are weaponized against immigrants, trans people, people of color, women, and educators, the notion of informed prayer is even more important.
We give thanks for this World Day of Prayer and the women throughout the world who call us to Informed Prayer and Prayerful Action. In a time such as this, we should find ourselves on our knees and then find ourselves moving toward justice.
PRAYER
Dear God, we come together in unity and gratitude, acknowledging the strength that lies in our shared faith and the power of prayer to heal, uplift, and inspire. On this World Day of Prayer, we ask for guidance in fostering peace, justice, and compassion in our world. May
we be instruments of love and understanding, bridging divides and embracing our common humanity. Help us to act with kindness and humility, standing in solidarity with those in need, and working towards a world where all people are treated with dignity and respect. Amen.
