SCRIPTURE
Exodus 3:7-8, 10
I have observed the misery of my people who are slaves in Egypt... I have heard their cry [for help]... I know their sufferings... I have come to deliver them [from slavery]. So, come with me, I will send you (Moses) to Pharaoh to bring my people out of Egypt.
WORDS OF HOPE
The way we worship and live out our spiritual practice can be threatened by major national and world events. Many of us are facing hardships or fears these days which can have the effect of disrupting our established religious practices. The question is what is happening to the pattern of our worship and faith practices? Is something new and creative born from the events around us? In the turmoil of our daily lives? Many people quietly ask: "Where is God's help in all of this?”
An answer can be found in the history of Israel. The descendants of Jacob were enslaved by the Egyptian Pharaoh, and their life was closely regulated by Egyptian overseers. From morning to dark, they labored in ever worsening conditions preparing materials for Pharaoh's construction projects. Meanwhile, the Hebrew, Moses, had escaped a death sentence and was living in the desert of Sinai.
One day while attending his Midianite father-in-law's sheep, he saw a burning bush and heard God's voice speaking to him in the words of the Above verse from Exodus. Here, God shows us how the divine purpose can change a bad situation into something which is good. God's transformation of bad to good is often accomplished when we humans listen to God's plan and act as co-participants in the necessary action. And the Season of Lent is a good time to start.
Infrequently does God act alone in such social transformations. Those of us who listen and follow are required participants. We must be willing to fit our life and effort into God's plan for the changes we seek. Many of us have already had years of practice in growing spiritually during the days of Lent. Are we listening for God’s inspirations to change even the small aspects of daily life and worship in order to transform this time of Lent into a good future guided by God’s love?
PRAYER
Lord God, our current world is bound up in uncertainty and fear. Even if change has not affected our current daily activity, we all have family and friends who seem to be swallowed by the events of the day. Lord, give us the wisdom and strength to keep our life anchored in your loving presence and purpose for each of us. And as you hold each of us tightly in your caring embrace, may we reach out to encourage and help others so that they too will experience your loving guidance. Amen.
