SCRIPTURE
Issaih 58:6-9
Is not this the fast that I choose:
to loose the bonds of injustice,
to undo the straps of the yoke,
to let the oppressed go free,
and to break every yoke?
Is it not to share your bread with the hungry
and bring the homeless poor into your house;
when you see the naked, to cover them
and not to hide yourself from your own kin?
Then your light shall break forth like the dawn,
and your healing shall spring up quickly;
your vindicator shall go before you;
the glory of the Lord shall be your rear guard.
Then you shall call, and the Lord will answer;
you shall cry for help, and he will say, “Here I am.”
WORDS OF HOPE
Lent begins. Every year I try to observe the season by fasting from dawn until dusk. I allow myself only liquids. It is a yearly practice that I consider a spiritual discipline and if focuses me. I try to use the time I would have spent eating breakfast or lunch, writing. Contrary to what some people believe, writing is not something that comes easily. It is somewhat painful and requires all my concentration. Part of that is because of the fact that I have dyslexia, so reading and writing are both activities that take a lot of concentration for me.
As I sit writing this devotion, I realize that having the extra time gained by fasting is a blessing in itself. The surprising extra blessing is that I lose weight. Not the sole purpose of my fast, but I consider it a bit of a perk.
This year I think I shall follow Issah’s advice and use what I would have spent on food to give to those in need. It is also a little perk to keep me motivated.
PRAYER
May we find in these days of Lent a renewed connection with the Divine and find spiritual food to fill our lives.
Amen
