SCRIPTURE
Psalm 37:3-5
Trust in the LORD and do good; dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture.
Take delight in the LORD, and God will give you the desires of your heart.
Commit your way to the LORD;
trust in the LORD and God will do this.
WORDS OF HOPE
Life can be wonderful and full of joy in our relations with others and life can be frustrating and plagued with doubt at those times. On those frustrating days, an exploration of the Psalms and some meditations of what we find there can help. As in the few words from Psalm 37, the psalmist often provides us with some adequate reassurance. As a Christian it is our privilege and our comfort to trust God's Spirit to be fully present and helpful in each of our daily interactions with others.
But we are human and we can forget this. Often, we must walk into days without much confidence, but we are not alone in the effort to find blessings in each of our human encounters. However, we must make a conscious effort to be aware of the Spirit's presence and guidance in those opportunities.
That may sound like a daunting challenge. I'd like to suggest some "exercises to build up the necessary spiritual muscles" to begin this task.
- First, as you encounter someone, give a big smile. (In this perpetual Covid 19 era, some of us still opt to wear a mask in public. Your mask may hide it, but the emotion behind that greeting will radiate forth from your body.)
- Second, as you start to have a conversation, pause and silently seek God's presence in your words. If they ask a more difficult question or seek your opinion, pause (as if giving their question your thought) and ask God's Spirit to guide your response. You'll be surprised by how much better that human action progresses. God's Spirit is a fantastic guide and help!
PRAYER
Precious Lord, guide me this day as I enter into conversations and interactions with others. May the Spirit's presence in each of these experiences allow me to demonstrate your love, truth and peace. May I recognize the rich blessings which it will provide to both me and the other individual. At the end of this day, I will give thanks to you for your loving presence in my life.
Amen.
