SCRIPTURE
Jesus was in the town of Bethany, eating at the home of Simon, who had leprosy. A woman came in with an expensive jar of perfume and poured it on the head of Jesus. But when the disciples saw this, they became angry and complained, “What a waste! We could have sold it for a lot of money and given it to the poor!”
WORDS OF HOPE
Image the scene as described In today’s Scripture. It is obviously dinner time, and you have special guests including Jesus of Nazareth who has been teaching and performing miracles all over Judea of late. We can presume that your spouse is especially thrilled with the dinner party since most people outside the immediate family had shunned him due to his leprosy. He cannot remember the last time anyone of note sat right next to him. You want everything to be perfect and as you are finishing placing the serving bowls and wine glasses on the table, your daughter arrives and immediately pours perfume on the head of Jesus! The disciples begin to argue about the waste of good perfume. Oyvey, what next? And you are worried about keeping the food warm. While it was a polite custom to provide perfume for the guest of honor to dispel the body odor from living on the road, you didn’t really to use that much! Jesus raises his hand and smiles at all at the table and smiles at his disciples, host and hostess and family members. He thanks all for their presence and for the food they are about to share and insists that the perfume was well-used and he had been grateful for the gesture. Can you just imagine who broke the silence and asked to have the vegetables passed?
Jesus frequently ate with the marginalized folks for which he was criticized by the Jewish leaders. He was eating with the unclean, with the tax collectors and prostitutes and with those who have no voice in society or in the Temple. Do we share meals with those who are marginalized in our society? How do we deal with ourselves as “the poor?” What is our leprosy? What is our addiction? Do we have a need to have Jesus to be our dinner guest? What scent from our souls needs to be covered with the perfume of grace and forgiveness and compassion and love? How wiling are we to have others pour out the love that we need upon our head and soul? When that balm is removed from our eyes, how new do we see the world and those in it that we know as brothers and sisters?
PRAYER
O Holy One, we come before you again with gratitude and humility. Thank you for this time of reflection. Remind us always that we are your eyes and ears and hands on the earth today. We are your Body and what we do and don't do represents you in the world. Help us to make the right choices so that a little bit of heaven will be known on earth. We ask this through your many names, AMEN.
